Known for its towering steel factories, ironclad work ethic, and hometown pride, Pittsburgh serves as the perfect backdrop for country music. It was only a matter of time before City of Bridges gave the genre a new voice. Meet Justin Fabus. Capturing country spirit with soul and style, the singer and songwriter shares thirteen honest and heartfelt anthems on his 2018 independent full-length debut, Remedy.

“To me, country is all about songwriting,” he exclaims. “It’s hard-working. It’s blue-collar. That’s Pittsburgh in a nutshell. I write what I live. When I sing my songs, I feel them, and I mean them.”

As a result of that dedication, he’s quietly built a growing fan base since first arriving in 2013. Collecting his Save Me and self-titled EPs into one release, 2016’s Justin Fabus bowed at #3 on iTunes Top Country Albums chart upon arrival. Between headlining countless shows and sharing bills alongside the likes of Gary Allan, Randy Houser, and Craig Campbell, he lit up the stage at the 2017 CMA Music Festival as a touted “Emerging Artist.” Along the way, he attracted critical acclaim and landed looks from AXS, The Boot, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and more.

When it came time to begin recording Remedy, Justin decided to switch up his process and welcome songwriting collaborators such as Joe Henry [Frank Sinatra, John Denver, Garth Brooks] and Tony Lucca of The Voice into the fold. Recording with producer Matt Very at Very Tight Recordings in Pittsburgh, he bucked the usual trend of utilizing studio musicians and would be backed by his live band—Miguel Garcia [lead guitar], Owen Dougan-Bacha [drums], and Ryan Yingst [bass].

Capitalizing on intense chemistry, they tracked the entire album in only three weeks.

How was it to be named at the 2017 CMA Music Festival as an Emerging Artist?

It was a great honor. It’s an achievement that I’m very proud of.

Has this helped you?

Absolutely. I am also now a member of the Country Music Association. When it comes to country music, it doesn’t get better than the CMA’s.

You are from Pittsburgh. How was your homecoming show?

There’s no greater feeling than playing in front of thousands of people in your hometown. I’m blessed and very thankful to have my hometown’s love.

Is Pittsburgh a country music town?

It definitely is. Country music is blue collar, and it’s doesn’t get bluer collar than Pittsburgh.

Did you get the change to check out American Idol runner up Gabby Barrett who is from Pittsburgh?

Justin Fabus

She’s crazy talented and so young. She has a great career ahead of her.

Why did you decide to do a country version of the song 2 in the morning?

From the moment I first heard that song. The lyrics and the vibe of it all screamed a country song to me in my head.

Why is your tour called “Back From Hell”?

The second half of 2018 was a rough year for me. I split from my management after 6 years together and unfortunately it was an ugly break up. My mother was dying of Pancreatic Cancer. Once 2019 started, it felt like I just got back from hell.

What year and make of guitar do you play?

I play an all-black 200 Series Deluxe Grand Auditorium Taylor.

Is your touring gear different from your studio one?

The same gear I rehearse in my studio with is the gear I always use on the road.

On your record, you recorded a John Denver song. Why Mr. Denver?

I actually didn’t record a John Denver song; I co-wrote the song “Understand” with lyricist Joe Henry who was John Denver’s songwriting partner.

Are you ready for all of your hommie to come to see you at the Dollar Bank?

Three River Art Festival in June?

Absolutely! It’s my first time playing at the festival and I couldn’t be more excited.

Can you tell you fans any information about the private event at the Chicago House of Blues?

My lips are sealed on that one.

Justin Fabus

Since you are from Pittsburgh, I am going to name some other bands from Pittsburgh and I would like to you say something about each.

Christina Aguilera

Her voice is unbelievably beautiful and not to mention that she’s a Grammy award winner.

Wiz Khalifa
I think Wiz is one of the best Hip Hop artists in the game right now and has definitely set the bar when it comes to Pittsburgh Hip Hop artists.

Rusted Root
I’m a big fan of Michael Glabicki. He’s an insanely talented musician. The band has sold millions of albums, enough said right there.

Povertyneck Hillbillies
I love Chris Higbee, he’s just an all-around great person. I admire his work ethic the most. We are doing a show together in August and I can’t wait.

Who influences you growing up?

There’s so many, to be honest. To name a few I would say, Billy Joel, Waylon Jennings, Sam Cook, Bruce Springsteen, Tim McGraw, and Richard Marx.

What was your first guitar and do you still have it?

My mom bought me my first acoustic guitar which was a “Samick”. I use it today to write songs.

How do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Hopefully with at least one number 1 song.

Anything in closing for your fans?

Thank you for your unwavering support and love. Without each and every one of you, none of this would be possible.
