Sound Of The Sirens

Three Wise Monkeys, Colchester UK, March 21, 2019

by Andrew Mackenzie

I have never been to this venue before and was very surprised at the nice little space that they had on the top floor for music. I got myself a drink and ended up bumping into the vocalist of the support band; Ghosts Of Men and cracked a joke with him, it didn’t go down well.

The support act was “Ghosts Of Men” a two-piece made up of lead guitar and vocalist Clegg and on drums Adam. Their sound rather unique and nothing I’ve heard before they class themselves as; Alt-rock with a slight chance of heavy… which when listening to them was pretty spot on. The duo has a good stage presence and love interacting with the audience with a comical aspect, they seem to have a long running gag of adding the word “remix” to all of their songs, which are mostly covers of other songs. They played around 7 songs including; “Hey now” “Breathe”, and two of their own called “The Remix” and “Little Death”. These two were funny and a great support act.

Whilst waiting for main band, Sound of The Sirens to come on I grabbed myself a drink and then on the way back to the stage bumped into Abbie Martin from Sound Of The Sirens, who had seen me taking photos and apologized that she didn’t come to say hello earlier, she thanked me for coming to review her band and then got on stage.

Sounds of the Sirens got on stage. They are a West Country folk-rock duo made up of Abbie Martin and Hannah Wood from Exeter UK. The girls are currently on a UK tour promoting their latest album which came out 25th January this year called “This Time” their tour ending in April. They have their own unique sound which is beautiful to listen to with passion in each song. They played a great selection of songs including their two singles from their latest album, “Awakening” & “Troubles” and a wonderful song where they mashed about six female written songs together. The girls have a great connection and love the music they make with sounds of wildwood kin and Florence and the machines they’re harmonies and vocals as a whole are mind-blowing there is passion and soul in each song. Each plays a number of instruments when performing from guitars, keys, mandolins and each has a small kick drum. I loved working with these two they have brilliant stage presence and love interacting with the small crowd that they had I feel they put 100% into their performance and would do the same for a big crowd. They got a huge round of applause when they finished their set which was just what they deserved after playing to a great little crowd. I love finding new bands and style of music to review and shoot and long may it continue.

I will put these two on my watch again list as they are both great bands.
