By Dan Locke

NYC based mall pop punk artist Maddie Glass.  Entitled “Space Boyfriend” the song is about wanting to find that special person and in Maddie’s case a “space boyfriend.” Featuring 90’s inspired grunge guitar riffs, shiny pop punk melodies and spunk fused vocals, “Space Boyfriend” is the perfect hopeful anthem for summer.

You are from NYC. What was your upbringing like?

My upbringing was great! I am extremely close to my family and have the most supportive parents in the world who have always supported my career aspirations. I grew up auditioning in and around NYC after school, sometimes during school which was always fun, and look back on those years very fondly.

How did you discover music?

I have a very musical family so I was introduced to music at a very young age. I remember sitting with my dad while he would play guitar and show me all of his favorite bands. I found my love for music probably around age 6 or 7!

How did you start to write music?

I started writing music as a kid. It was almost therapeutic to me. Whenever school was getting hard and I didn’t feel understood I would turn to music as a form of self-expression. Guess I had a good intuition back then because to this day I do the same things!

Tell me a little bit about your off-Broadway productions?

Acting has been my dream forever and being able to perform in the city growing up was amazing! It taught me a lot about the rigor you need to have in order to be in this industry and I loved every second of it. I can’t wait for things to open back up now that COVID is coming to an end and we can all start performing again!

How did you get your first guitar, and do you still have it?

My first guitar was a Taylor Acoustic 310 that my mom used to play. I still have it and it has a really great tone.

What is your guitar of choice now?   Year, make and model?

I recently got a Gibson Les Paul Jr which I love and that’s what I play now.

Describe your music?

My music is mainly 2000s pop punk! I love the throwback sound but with a contemporary edge. I would also describe my lyrics as raw, honest, and unapologetically me. I write what I know and I write about things that I have seen and gone through.

What was your first performance like?

My first performance was a recital where I sang my first song I had ever written. I was 7 and so nervous. It is crazy to think I have had the same dreams for my whole life! I have a recording of the performance and it is so cute to watch back!

What makes a good songwriter?

I think what makes a good songwriter is perspective shifting. You need to be able to understand a circumstance from different points of view and express that on paper. It is the challenge between writing something that is universal, but broad, to writing something too specific. Also, being able to take things from everyday life and condense them down into lyrics that represent the same feeling you had in the moment.

What was the title of your first original song? Did you record it?

My first original song I definitely did not record because I was so young, but my first released song is called “Livin in 2021” and is still one of my favorite songs that I have ever written.

Tell me about your new song “Space Boyfriend”?

“Space Boyfriend” is about being fed up with the boys that I had been dating and everyday mundane life. It is about longing for something out of this world and not settling for less. And it is about accepting feeling different from others, and celebrating it!

Tell me about any more music coming out soon?

The rest of my EP, Thank You For Breaking My Heart, will be out later this summer!!!! Follow me on Instagram to find out when! @maddieglasss

Digital vs. vinyl?

This is a hard one! I think both answers are correct just because digital is so much more accessible to everyone, but the feeling of listening to music on vinyl is like no other!
