Natalie Shay is a 20 year old multi award-winning, indie pop/rock artist from North London. Deemed as one of London’s hottest emerging talents and having already acquired an impressive array of awards, Shay is ready to launch herself into the forefront of the industry. New single ‘Yesterday’ premiered on Billboard magazine and was featured on 9 New Music Friday playlists including the UK.
How did you discover music?
Natalie Shay: I’ve been playing classical guitar since I was 5 years old, around the same time I started training in musical theatre, then when I was around 11, heavily inspired by Taylor swift I began writing songs and started gigging aged 13.
How did you get your first guitar? And do you still have it?
my first guitar was a half-sized classical, I still have it! I have all of the guitars I’ve ever owned
Is PRS endorsing you now? What guitar did they give you?
I have a SE 245 in tobacco sunburst I love it, it’s perfect. my fave part is the birds on the neck, they’re pretty
Are you a guitar gearhead?
Can’t say I am, I love a good guitar but as an acoustic/classical girl I don’t know much about the electric world.
What was your first gig like?
It was in Sainsbury’s car park in Balham as park of London folk festival
Your music has been placed into Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist in 10 countries. How do you feel about that?
It’s pretty amazing, it’s the best way to get your music noticed in other countries, it’s great to get such a prestigious placement.
You are one of the UK’s hottest emerging artists. How is that affecting your music creatively?
I do feel there is a lot of pressure to constantly release ‘bangers’, an unwritten pressure for each release to do better than the last
Tell me about your April 17th release of your EP NAKED?
NAKED is my first and biggest release, I’m really excited to release my first full body of work.
What did you do on Valentine’s day? Did you have a date?
I released ‘Not the Girl’
Any plans to tour the US?
Not a tour but i will be in LA in may
