Wavves 12th Anniversary “King of the Beach” tour makes waves in Richmond.

The alternative, pop punk rock band, Wavves, brought a load of energy, moshing, and even some Jameson shots to the Broadberry in Richmond, Virginia. Previously, the tour was supposed to run for the 10th anniversary of the “King of the Beach” album, however the shows were canceled due to the COVID -19 pandemic of 2020. The frontman and founder of the band, Nathan Williams, hails from Norfolk, Virginia although the band is based in San Diego, California.

The night began with supporting acts from Smut, an experimental moody pop band from Chicago, and BOYO, a hazy and melodic indie-pop project by Robert Tilden. The acts got the crowd ready to go as many excitedly prepared for the moshing that was to come.

Fans head banged and jumped as Wavves ran up on stage to start their set with “King of the Beach.” Their sound brings a variety of fans to the show that explore the booming pop punk scene that Richmond brings so the venue was heavily attended. The mosh pit bumped and pushed into each other- but participants were respectful and quick to help anyone that needed it.

A few songs in, Williams pulled out a bottle of Jameson, unbeknownst to him that it needed to be kept in a separate room. In a true punk-rocker way, he finished the remains of the bottle and the crowd screamed. Another hyped fan bought shots for the whole band. “This next song is about drinking a lot,” Williams laughed as he went back in on the guitar. They crushed the remaining songs includings, “Green Eyes”, a fan favorite that many yelled for throughout the show.

The whole night was memorable and it’s safe to say that we all hope Wavves comes through Richmond again soon.
