Elle Brightly

Interview conducted on February 06, 2021

By Dan Locke

Elle Brightly brings a fresh, girl-next-door look to the pop music scene. While music surrounds Elle through singing and playing percussion instruments in a band, she also plays volleyball, basketball, and is a member of her school cheer team. Developing the new songs for Elle’s EP has been Elle’s dream come true. Writing and collaborating on each piece has given her the opportunity to grow through her music. Elle believes each song has something everyone can relate to, but most of all her music is fun and dance-able. “It’s what the world needs now, happy heart-full music”.

How did you discover music?

Music has always been a part of my life; I think I was born with music.  When I was young, my mom would have music/dance nights. My sister and I would sing and make up dances to our favorite songs, then perform them. The music feels natural to me and so does writing lyrics because I have been writing from a young age.

How did you start to write music?

For years I have kept a journal with song ideas and lyrics. Writing and poetry come naturally to me and when I have thought about a song, I write in a journal. When I don’t have my journal, I put the lyrics on my phone.  But the most interesting thing about the songs I write is that when I hear the beat/instrumental of music, the lyrics fall into place.  In the writing room for both of my last singles, I listened to the track and the song idea just came to me. Everyone is always surprised that I can write lyrics at my young age.

For “I Know Your Type”, I heard the track and said to the team, “When I hear this, I think about seeing someone for who they are and knowing right away I know your type.”  I explained what I meant by “type” and the lyrics came together quickly. I think we had the whole song written in one hour because it all came naturally.

Describe your music.

My music is written about what is happening now, socially. Expressing feelings is hard, especially when it’s about the opposite sex or someone you like. My music is saying the things we think
but aren’t saying out loud. And those things can be said in a good way, an upbeat way. My music will make you want to dance while saying what’s inside your head.

Do you belong to any to songwriters’ organizations like the International singer-songwriter association, SESAC, BMI or ASCAP?

I belong to BMI as a songwriter, and I also own Brightly Worldwide Music production company, also with BMI.

What was the title of your first original song? Did you record it?

My first song was “You Got Me”. Again, it was written with the idea that we aren’t saying what we really want to say. It’s a song with a dance beat. I have recorded it, and we are holding it for release.

How did you get Jason Dauman of Dauman Music to discover you? (For those who don’t know who he is, he has worked with the likes of Debbie Gibson, Hilary Roberts and KORR-A.)

I was under a lucky star when Jason found me. A friend of Jason’s saw my last video “Figure It Out” on YouTube. He contacted Jason about a young girl that could have a future in the industry. Jason reached out to my mom, and the rest is history. Sometimes you just have to take a chance, and Jason took a chance on me. Dauman Music has big plans for “I Know Your Type”. The song has already been picked up by two celebrity re-mixers and will be promoted throughout Europe, then brought back to the US.

Quote from Jason Dauman/Dauman Music

“I’m delighted to have signed Elle and look forward to a great future with her in the coming years! She has varied talents musically and should continue to evolve. It will be a fun journey. Elle’s dynamic debut single promises to take her up the dance music charts around the world.” – Jason Dauman

Tell me about your newest song “I Know Your Type”?

“I Know Your Type” sends a message of girl power. It’s sort of an anthem with an upbeat tune. It’s good for girls to make their own decisions and choices about who is in their life, and it doesn’t have to be approached in a negative way. Set your standards! You can say it, sing it,
and dance!

What are your feelings about streaming music?

Streaming makes music so easy. It’s perfect for the listener. I love that they can just say “play music by Elle Brightly” and my songs are delivered right then and there. I don’t know what it was like when people went to record stores and bought albums; streaming and downloading music is what’s normal to me.

What song from the past is in your mind right now? Moreover, what is the meaning that song means to you?

“Acapella” by Karmin. This song speaks to me because it communicates that you don’t need a guy that doesn’t treat you right and you can get by just fine being single. Again
girl anthem! Also, it has an amazing beat and great lyrics that make you feel the need to sing along.

What else would you like to tell your audience about?

I’m just like you.  Socially I have the same issues, we all have good and bad days.  I just happen to have music as an outlet and I’m sharing it with you. I want you to hear my music and be happy, to know you’re not alone. Listen to my songs as an anthem, as a bond between us girls.
