Jennifer Emard

Interview conducted on February 15, 2021

By Dan Locke

She released a new single “Beautifully Unbroken”. This powerful song captures Jennifer’s raw, enchanting vocals are the centerpiece to this arrangement. The emotion that pours from her voice will leave the listener with no choice but to be completely mesmerized. Unlike most of what we hear today, “Beautifully Unbroken” has a very orchestral feel that pairs beautifully with Jennifer’s resounding vocals. The instrumentation in this haunting ballad consists of only keys, horn, flute, and a slight bassline.

You are from Terrell, Texas. What is your upbringing?

Typical, middle class. I was raised in a loving home with two parents, a brother and a dog.

How did you discover music?

I have always loved music. I didn’t realize I loved performance until I stepped on a stage the first time. As soon as I got home, I told my parents I knew what I wanted them to do with my life and asked them to push me.

How did you start to write music?

I started out journaling and writing poetry. I started taking songwriter courses as a young teenager.

Describe your music

I would describe my writing style as artsy, poetic and typically leans towards a relationship topic.

You used to have a band.  Why did you decide to go solo?

I still perform with a band, but as a solo artist. I also do solo acoustic shows. I have been in groups for years, but sometimes life just calls you to a new place and adventure.

What was your first performance at like?

Very nerve wracking

You opened up for Charlie Daniels.  Did he give you any words of wisdom?

He was wonderful. He told me to pray and follow God’s direction.

What makes a good songwriter?

Always learning and striving to write a better song than the last.

Do you belong to any to songwriters’ organizations like the International singer-songwriter association, SESAC, BMI or ASCAP?

I’m a member of BMI.

Tell me about your new latest release “Beautifully Unbroken”

I love this song. I was trying to capture an emotion with words and music. I feel like I was successful. I feel like the message is relevant and I’ve received some great feedback.

You take your kids on the road with you. Are they your roadie while you perform?

I love taking my kids on the road with me. There’s nothing like holding your kid’s hostage trying to have meaningful conversations.

Are you still doing vocal coaching?

I do. I have a very limited availability, but I try to keep a few students.

Have you discovered or rediscovered any new hobbies?

I was looking over your tour schedule and it looked like to me that you never slow down.  You were playing during the lockdown.  How was that.

Interesting. It still is. I feel fortunate knowing I’ve been able to stay booked.

How was it to play at Blacksmith?

I love playing. I love the people. I’ve never played a disappointing venue.

95% of people said that they have changed the way they watch television.  This includes people who don’t have television and using their computers to do streaming of programs and movies. Which is your favorite streaming channel?

I don’t really watch television. There isn’t enough time. I normally take Sunday evenings and watch PBS for nostalgia.
