Eclectic Horror Pop Superstars HorrorPops To Release Their First Ever Live Album on June 18th

Interview conducted on June 12, 2021

By Dan Locke,

It’s been over 12 years since L.A. transplants HorrorPops have released a full-length album and almost as many years since they’ve performed their delicious blend of ‘80s new wave, punk, rockabilly, surf and ska on stage. So, it seems especially fitting that the Copenhagen natives, still led by the powerhouse duo of Patricia Day and Kim Nekroman, have marked their return with a spectacular full-length, multi-media concert album that brings all the magic of the band’s stage show to your home.

Filmed and recorded in early 2020, Live At The Wiltern features supercharged performances of the band’s best-loved tunes including “Walk Like A Zombie,” “Miss Take,” “Freaks In Uniforms,” “Where They Wander,” “Hit ‘N’ Run,” “Psychobitches Outta Hell” and so much more!

Patricia credits the fans with this show’s release: “‘We wouldn’t be here without you’ is a total cliché, but damn, you made it true and this album is the proof. We might have forgotten we were a band, but you sure as hell didn’t!”

This very special release will be available on June 18th, 2021 in all formats including a superb Blu-ray / DVD / CD combo pack as well as on colored vinyl (gold or silver) or a 180-gram BLACK vinyl.

How did you discover music?

To me, music was always there…. it’s as difficult as to answer when I discovered food or something similar.

There was music on Tv, music on the radio and even in elevators and supermarkets 🙂

Kim- How did you get your first guitar, and do you still have it?

I got my first guitar from the Danish version of Penny Saver. It was an old 1960’s Framus Television Hollow body selling for $25… (yes twenty-five).

When I called the guy, he said that someone else was on the way already to pick it up. I was obviously bummed out to miss such a great deal.

However, two days later the guy who bought it, called me and said the seller had given him my phone number if the guitar wasn’t what he expected.

To my luck, he was not happy with the guitar and was willing to let me have it for what he paid for it. Without any hesitation, I went and got the guitar.

Yes, indeed I still have that guitar.

Kim, I know you also play bass.  How did you come across the custom coffin shaped bass?

I build all my coffin basses myself.

Kim- What is your guitar of choice now?   Year, make and model?

For the past many years, I’ve been playing my custom painted Sparrow “Big Daddy” Hollow body. It was made around 2008 by the now-defunct Vancouver Canada company.

I have later beefed it up with TV-Jones Classic Plus pickups and other hardware.

Pat- How did you pick up the bass?

She picked up double bass when we formed the band. She was a guitarist and I was a bassist…. switching instruments was a nice challenge and gave us both a new angle and approach to writing music.

Pat- What is the make and model of your double bass?

That would be a Nekroman make and model HorrorPops. Yes, I custom built that bass for her.

How did you start the HorrorPops? How did you get your bands name?

We formed the band after my band and Patricia’s former band played together at the Cologne Popkom in Germany. It was an annual music industry gathering. After the show

We talked about how cool it could be to form a band that didn’t really fall into any specific category or genre. A band that took inspiration from anything from Dolly Parton and Depeche Mode to Gene Vincent and Motorhead. No rules, just having a good time.

What was your first performance as a band like?

Not sure I even remember that anymore….it was probably chaotic haha.

Why didn’t Dave Navarro make the band?

From Patricia MySpace

Haha he wasn’t Danish enough 🙂

What is the story behind the Barbie Doll lawsuit?

Under the advice of counsel, I assert my Fifth Amendment privilege.

Tell me about your new Deluxe Blu-Ray/DVD/CD?

After a long hiatus, we decided to tour again in early 2020. We had a sold-out show at the Wiltern in Los Angeles and Cleopatra approached us with a deal to film the show for a DVD/Blu-Ray/CD and Vinyl release. We thought that would be a great treat for our fans and an awesome way to mark our return to the stage and touring life.

It’s capturing what we are all about and is a manifestation of the love we have for performing.

You film it right before the Covid-19 was a think.  Did you have any feeling that it was a read thing at the time?

Yes, it was filmed in February 2020, so one month prior to the initial Covid lockdowns. At the time of the filming, it was still unclear what major impact it would have on, not just China, but the rest of the world. We had planned several tours in 2020, but that obviously didn’t happen as planned. We are just happy that we were able to finish that tour before everything went crazy.

What is your favorite track on your album?

Hmmm…. I don’t think I have a favorite track…I’m just happy and stoked about the result…. All the fan-favorites are included and I hope that the fans will be just as happy with the result as we are.

How can bands keep their fans if they cannot play live in front of the fans and sell merchandise to them at the show?

That is a hard one. Luckily our fans are very loyal…after all they waited almost ten years for our return. When we came back in January 2020, it was like we never left…. fans that were teenagers the last time they saw us, were now adults with kids on their own lol

What about Holographic concerts in our living room?

Now that could be neat…. unfortunately, we are not quite there with that technology, but when it gets here, that is certainly something we would explore.

 What is your happy place?

I like building stuff…. music instruments, cars, electronics, motorcycles etc etc, so doing that at home, makes me pretty happy.

Yes, we would love to play shows like that. As for precautions, it’s all up to the individual state and authorities to follow whatever current guidelines. Hopefully, by then, we are closer to herd immunity.

Anything you would like to say in closing.
