Honey County- created their own musical landscape: a place where the songs are anthemic, the harmonies are soaring, and two empowered women run the show

Interview conducted November 24, 2020

By Dan Locke

Rooted in southern storytelling, punctuated by pop hooks, and brushed with California sunshine, Honey County is a harmony-heavy country duo featuring Dani Rose and Sofie Lynn. Formed in Los Angeles, the band also has roots in the Bible Belt and Texas. That diversity is reflected in Honey County’s music, a blend of contemporary country and timeless pop/rock that makes room for Nashville twang, West Coast harmonies and everything in between.

How did you discover music? How did you start to write music?

Sofie:  Music was always a thing in my house; my parents aren’t musicians but my dad can get down with some karaoke and my mom would play music in the car everywhere we went. I started really diving into songwriting when I returned home from school heartbroken over a boy, devastated over the passing of my grandma, and feeling a little lost. Music was the only thing that remained constant and it got me through some pretty rough times.

How did you girls get the band together? How the band did get its name?

Sofie: I reached out to Dani on Instagram after seeing her play at the House of Blues in Anaheim, just looking to write with someone doing country music here in LA. We met up to play some music and then decided to go out to a party… and the rest is history! haha

Dani: The name Honey County has been a name I’ve loved for a while, it originated with a different bandmate in the beginning (also I’ve always been a huge fan of honey) We were putting our first and last names in a word scrambler and the two words Honey County stuck out! –

Describe your music

Dani: Our influences are everyone from the queens’ Dolly Parton, Emmy Lou Harris, Linda Ronstadt – Tim McGraw, Morgan Wallen, Dan & Shay, Allman Brothers – and we can’t forget Boys II Men and Usher

What was your first performance like together?

Dani: We played a benefit for the Veterans Association around Thanksgiving; it was an honor to play for our servicemen and women! – Dani,

Tell me about your latest single “Cry Wolf and Ghost Town”?

Cry Wolf is a song that we had been anticipating releasing for a while. We loved playing it live and hearing people howl with us, so it was a no brainer when we decided to put it out around Halloween. Ghost Town, on the other hand, was written shortly after the pandemic hit. We were driving down Sunset Blvd and it felt eerily empty, like a ghost town. After writing the song we realized how well “Cry Wolf” and “Ghost Town” went together and decided to release them as a double single.

How do you stay healthy while touring?

Dani: We love to juice! Honestly, our fav place to go to is Urban Juicer in Nashville, we make our own on the road – Celery, Lemon, Apple & Mint.

Digital vs. vinyl?

Sofie:  It really just depends what mood I am in, I like how accessible digital music is, but there is nothing like the sound of vinyl!

What song from the past is in your mind right now? Moreover, what is the meaning that song means to you?

Dani: Currently jamming to Kung Fu Fighting because that was the song, we danced to in the middle of the Joshua Trees to keep warm while filming our new music video for “Cry Wolf.”

What have you been doing with your self-quarantine?

Dani: We have been cooking a lot! We love posting our Honey County Kitchen videos so people can follow along with our cooking adventures.

Have you discovered or rediscovered any new hobbies?

Sofie:  I rediscovered my love for roller skating!

If you can’t do music what would you like to be doing?

Sofie:  I would be a florist and own a flower shop. I love putting together flower bouquets. –
