Deanna Devore is a Chicago and Toronto based multi-instrumentalist,singer, songwriter, and producer. Her music beautifully blends downtempo electronic beats with organic instrumentation, creating emotionally captivating music that has been resonating with audiences across the globe. Devore’s polished musicianship, modern production techniques and compelling songwriting emanates a maturity and sophistication that spans across downtempo electronic, R&B, neo-soul, jazz and orchestral territories.
Dan Locke: How did you get started in music?
Deanna Devore: I’ve been playing instruments since I was a little kid and then started writing music. I guess you could say it’s always been in my blood.
Who were your musical influences growing up?
Hm, I listened to a lot of Canadian bands like Matthew Good Band… I listened to more of indie/alternative music when I was growing up
You are hanging out in Chicago. What is your favorite music venue?
I’d say my fav venue is Lincoln Hall and then in Evanston it’s SPACE.
Tell me about playing at the Metro back on April 1, 2010? I think the lineup was Bonobo, the Invisible, Deanna Devore.
That was a great show! Bonobo was one of my huge inspirations so it was an honor to open up for him.
Why did you release “Deck the Halls”. Are you thinking about doing a Christmas cd someday?
I had recorded “Deck the Halls” for a freelance project and then decided to release it for myself. I wasn’t planning on doing a Christmas EP.
How do you stay healthy while touring?
It’s tough – try to eat well and get as much sleep as possible.
How did you get your first guitar? And do you still have it?
My first guitar was actually a baritone ukulele because I was too small for a guitar. I do still have it 🙂
What is the year make and model of your favorite guitar? And what is its name?
I have a Gibson CS336… it’s my baby, but I never named the guitar.
Tell me about your latest single “Lately”?
“Lately” is a neo-soul single featuring a mystery vocalist.
You just released “Lately” the last couple of days. Why did it take you so long to get the video together to showcase the music?
The video just came out! I timed it with the release.
Can you announce the featured vocalist on the track yet?
I can’t yet, unfortunately.
Have you done any of the singer spotlights in Chicago (Chicago Singer Spotlight or Stephanie Rogers Story Jam)?
I haven’t.
Are you still using Myspace?
Do people still use myspace?
What are the differences between the Chicago music scene and the Toronto Music scene?
I think the difference might be the kind of music that’s popular in the city? A lot of Toronto artists seem to have that Drake sound these days.
Do you have a tour plan?
. I actually don’t have a tour planned currently!
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself writing and producing for other artists and commercial projects as well as continuing to release stuff under my name.
