JD Reynolds

Interview conducted on July 28, 2021

By Dan Locke

Country singer/songwriter JD Reynolds sets the scene for a carefree, feel-good summer with the release of her music video for “WHATEVER“. The music video features Reynolds and her girl gang headed for a night out, enjoying each other’s company because it’s simply all they need. The classic country storyline turns dynamic and powerful with pop/rock influence, making it the perfect tune to add to every girls-night-out playlist. The music video depicts Reynold’s upbeat attitude and confidence for a stress-free night, unbothered by any country-boy temptation present at the bar. “WHATEVER” signifies that the only approval needed is your own! The lyrics come alive in this music video through creative excellence and a heart of gold, making you want to get up and dance with every word! “WHATEVER” was exclusively premiered by Country Rebel and is available to download and stream on all digital services now.

What is your upbringing?

Mum always says “Believe in yourself and chase your bliss”. So that’s what I am doing.

How did you discover music?

My Mum introduced me to music from the day I was born, she had the greats on repeat playing in the house, she still does.

How did you start to write music?

I rewrote the endings of all the nursery rhymes because I thought they were sad and scary!

You are a trained dancer and award-winning choreographer.  Why did you get into singing?

I sang in the wings to calm my nerves before any dance performance, and one of the world’s top choreographers heard me and told my mum “Your daughter is a great dancer but the kid can really sing!”

Describe your music.

Incomparable next level country music with a twist.

What was your first performance like?

2-year-old in a tutu. I was hooked.

What makes a good songwriter?

Blessed by God and all heart.

What is the process of writing your music?

Oh, that’s a whole article in itself. Let’s just say I’m a unique writer.

Your debut single was released 6 months ago.  Tell me how you got the idea for the song?

Covid sucks, 2020 sucked, I threw all that emotion into my debut single “This Year”. It packs a punch.

Tell me about your new song “Whatever”?

My attitude for 2021! WHATEVER! Go out, wear WHATEVER you like, do WHATEVER you like, say WHATEVER you like and don’t give a dang about WHATEVER anyone thinks of you! Let’s go!

Why 2 versions of the song?

2 versions, JD’s version and the Good Girl version. I drop the S bomb in my version, so if that offends you, I can respect that, I also have many children as fans, so there is a Good Girl version. I like my version!

What is your favorite track on your album?

They are all my favorites. I hope every song is everyone’s fave!

What are your feelings about streaming music?

Haha don’t get me started! On average, an artist earns $0.00348 (about one third of a cent) per stream of a song that an artist can spend anywhere between $5000 to $50,000 to produce. Do the math. After a listener has played an artist’s song 1000 times, that artist hasn’t earnt enough money to buy a packet of gum. I’ll say no more. Prince warned us, we should have listened. Imagine a future without music. NO music. With that in mind, what would you be happy to pay to listen to a song?

What is Pure Dust Country line of clothes?

Pure Dust is a vibrant up and coming Australian Company that makes fresh country merchandise unlike any other. Stay tuned! JD merch is coming!

Digital vs. vinyl?

Vinyl.

What song from the past is in your mind right now?

Moreover, what is the meaning that song means to you? Jolene! I remember my mum dancing around with me in her arms! And I’m wondering where the type of men are nowadays that Dolly begged Jolene not to take! OK that’s good, give me a sec while I Tweet that. You see a different side of me in Twitterland.

If “Video Killed the Radio Star” do you think that the Covid-19 virus has killed live music? Do you feel the Covid-19 virus is going to affect the music business in the future?

With streaming killing artists earnings, artists make the bulk of their money from LIVE show ticket sales and merch, so if we can’t perform LIVE, we can’t eat. To sing for your supper is not just a saying anymore, it’s a fact.

Do you think that Covid-19 has been a plus to an artist’s career?

No. We’re hurting just like so many other people and other industries. I feel for the whole world right now and every human on earth is in my prayers.

What have you been doing with your self-quarantine?

Writing, reflecting and praying.

Congratulations for winning the Best Outdoor Photo Competition.  Did your mom really take the photo?

Thanks! She sure did! Mum is an amazing photographer and it’s so great to see her work gracing magazine covers and winning competitions such as this one. She takes all my photos! Go Mum! She brings out the best in me because I feel so comfortable with her behind the camera I can just be myself. God really blessed me being born to such an amazing and loving mother.

How do you stay healthy during the lockdown?

I dance around the house after I eat Maccas!

Do you still surf?

I sure do. I am injured, so it’s very difficult and painful paddling out, but the ride in is always worth the pain.

Have you discovered or rediscovered any new hobbies?

Does scrabble count? Love that triple word score, especially if you have the letter Z! But I still can’t beat mum! One day.

With more and more live music happening, and the virus is still here, are you willing to play large concerts and festivals and what precautions would you like to have in place?

Sign me up! I am super keen to get on stage! Anytime, anyplace.

What about Holographic concerts in our living room?

I feed off of a LIVE audience. To see people’s faces, their smiles, their tears, their passion for my music, their energy, their voices, nothing will ever compare to a LIVE show. I love my fans like family.
