Interview Conducted on March 20, 2018

By Daniel Locke

Unrated: How did the Christian record label ForeFront find you, after you were only together as a band for a month?

John Cooper: Our manager had a relationship with Eddie DeGarmo , who was the owner of ForeFront. My manager was an agent for Eddie like 20 years earlier. He gave Eddie our demo.

You released your first worship album “Ardent” in 2001. How was it different from your other

recordings?

It was our only worship album. We had recorded some worshipful songs, but never really recorded songs that churches would sing at a service. However, worship music has always been included in our set. Even before there was much of a worship movement in the market. This was before the band Delirious, or Casting Crowns etc.

Many of your fans might not know you are a Christian Metal band. How do you feel your message is being received by these fans?

Skillet fans generally like the way that our music and lyrics make them feel. Generally, our music is hopeful, and people can relate to it. So, when fans find out we are Christian they generally do not care. They judge us on the music as long as they do not feel preached at or judged.

What is the difference between Winter Jam and your usual tours?

We normally play rock tours. Pretty much only rock bands play. So, the crowds are a lot rowdier and it’s a lot sweatier!

What’s it like to work with Lacey Sturm?

Lacey is a great friend and close with our family. She’s an amazing singer and has a truly passionate heart for ministry and art. So, it was really cool, and it was a great combo.

What do you like about playing in Russia?

Russian fans are amazing. Very dedicated and very sweet. They seem to like authenticity and emotional music, which is what we do well. I also like that they are very respectful and loving people.

Any new music planned for this year?

We are working on music as we speak and planning a release Skillet at end of the year. Fingers crossed:) We are also releasing a Jen Ledger solo project next month entitled “LEDGER “.
