Billy Idol brought his trademark sneer, unmistakable voice, and boundless energy to a nearly sold-out Ravinia Festival on Saturday night, proving that he remains one of rock’s most electrifying performers. Taking the stage shortly after 8:15 p.m., Idol wasted no time reminding the Highland Park crowd why his music has endured for more than four decades.
Opening with his new anthem, “Still Dancing,” Idol immediately established the evening’s theme — a celebration of resilience, longevity, and rock ‘n’ roll. Dressed in his signature black leather, and sporting his iconic platinum spikes, he looked every bit the punk-rock legend fans came to see. His unmistakable grin and playful interactions with the audience made the intimate Ravinia setting feel like a giant rock club. Idol performed crowd favorites including “Cradle of Love”, “Flesh for Fantasy”, “Blue Highway”, and “Rebel Yell”.
No Billy Idol concert would be complete without the outstanding musicians who have helped define his sound over the years. Longtime guitarist Steve Stevens once again proved why he is one of rock’s most respected players, delivering breathtaking solos, lightning-fast riffs, and the signature guitar work that has become inseparable from Idol’s biggest hits. Billy Morrison added rhythm guitar and backing vocals, while Stephen McGrath anchored the rhythm section with his driving bass lines alongside drummer Erik Eldenius, whose powerful, energetic playing kept the show moving at full throttle. Keyboardist Paul Trudeau added rich textures that brought songs like Eyes Without a Face to life. Equally impressive were backing vocalists Kitten Kuroi and Jessica Childress, whose soulful harmonies elevated the performance throughout the evening. Whether adding gospel-inspired power to the choruses or trading vocals with Idol during several songs, the pair brought warmth, energy, and a dynamic stage presence that perfectly complemented Idol’s unmistakable voice. Together, the seven-piece band delivered a polished, high-octane performance that showcased not only Idol’s enduring charisma but also the exceptional talent of the musicians surrounding him. The set expertly balanced new material with fan favorites
The party atmosphere reached full throttle with “Mony Mony,” sending the entire crowd to its feet. By the time “Rebel Yell” arrived, Ravinia had transformed into one giant sing-along, with Idol encouraging fans to match his energy throughout the song’s soaring chorus.
After a brief break, Idol returned for an encore that featured three of his biggest hits. “Dancing With Myself” instantly reignited the crowd before “Hot in the City” turned the venue into a summer celebration. The evening concluded perfectly with “White Wedding,” complete with Steve Stevens’ iconic opening guitar riff and one final opportunity for the audience to sing along at full volume.
More than just a nostalgia act, Billy Idol demonstrated why he continues to sell out venues around the world. His voice remains powerful, his band is exceptional, and his connection with audiences has only grown stronger over time. The concert was a reminder that great rock music doesn’t age — it simply becomes timeless.
On a beautiful summer evening under the stars at Ravinia, Billy Idol delivered exactly what fans hoped for: a high-energy, hit-filled performance that celebrated both his legendary career and the enduring spirit of rock ‘n’ roll. It was, indeed, a….. nice day for a Ravinia concert.
