2024 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival https://www.unratedmag.com/2024-new-orleans-jazz-and-heritage-festival/ Sat, 11 May 2024 12:27:54 +0000 https://www.unratedmag.com/?p=917449 2024 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival

Second weekend

Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots

 New Orleans, LA, USA

May 2-5, 2024

by Mary Aandrews

The performance of the Rolling Stones may well be the reason that attendance records almost topped one half a million people this year. The first weekend had a respectable attendance, but Thursday of the second weekend smashed all records with the second highest attendance in jazz festival history. Festival producer, Quint Davis, remarked, “Watching the Rolling Stones perform with New Orleans and Louisiana stars Irma Thomas and Dwayne Dopsie was to witness the power of the festival to demonstrate the connection of our culture to the greatest music of our time.”

There had been two other attempts to bring the Stones to New Orleans Jazz Festival in the past, but due to health and personal issues it had not come to pass. Jagger needed heart surgery and an entire leg of that tour was postponed. Their appearance was rescheduled for 2020, only to have that cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thursday was atypical from the standpoint that the other 13 stages closed out when the Rolling Stones took the stage at five pm. The Stones concert was simulcasted on the screens at the other larger stages during the concert. The band delivered an 18-song set that included the Stones first performance of “Time is on my Side” with Irma Thomas. Thomas had the first hit with the song in 1964.

There was a large runway that reached into the crowd that Mick Jagger used frequently with vigor throughout the set. Jagger at age 80 exhibits as much energy and athleticism as any lead singer much younger.  Jagger began the set wearing a glittery turquoise jacket with a red tuxedo shirt underneath, but the jacket didn’t survive past the second song, “Get Off of My Cloud.” The weather was warm and muggy.  Jagger soon stripped down to a long-sleeved black t-shirt, guitarist Ronnie Wood abandoned a layer of sparkles, and drummer Steve Jordan had to give up on his elegant suit jacket.

Keith Richards’ solo spot went to “Little T&A” from 1981’s “Tattoo You,” in a version that included the NOLA horn section.  Richards was one of the few musicians onstage who remained in his full regalia of long-sleeve satin shirt (in various colors) as well as a red knit beanie all night. Richards was grinning ear to ear all afternoon long.

“Honky Tonk Women” and “Paint It Black” felt fresh and vibrant, and Richards was dominant during “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” He always seems to find a new way to hit those unmistakable chords. It was a moment where you realize you are hearing the writer of the song that you have heard hundreds, even thousands of times, play the chords live. The show ended with “Satisfaction,” which generated excitement both onstage and in the audience. The band returned to the stage for a two-song encore of “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” and “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction.” The set was well worth the time and effort to experience the legendary band and the third time was a charm.

One of the biggest challenges when you attend the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is picking and choosing the artists to attend. It’s a difficult task when there are some 500 acts over two weekends. Many folks go and just follow their nose or ears. Personally, this reviewer studies the announced lineup well ahead of the festival and creates a list of no miss performers. Sometimes that works, other times not so much.

Blues rocker, Samantha Fish, performed on the same stage as the Rolling Stones earlier in the day on Thursday. She stepped out on stage dressed in a black leather-like suit ready to strutt her stuff. Fish was well aware that she was ‘opening’ for the Rolling Stones and seemed nervous. “Bulletproof” and “Better Be Lonely” were standout songs. It’s always a delight to see Fish perform. Fish was seen in the crowd after her set to personally experience the Stones’ set.

Dumpstaphunk played a set of NOLA funk on the Festival Stage ahead of The Stones and paid tribute to late bassist Nick Daniels, who died on Saturday. New Breed Brass Band with Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews also played a great Festival Stage show.

Other second weekend highlights included sets of Foo Fighters, Hozier, Allison Russell, Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram, and Queen Latiifah to name a few.

Foo Fighters was another rock band that had been cancelled in 2020 and 2021 at Jazz Festival. Their two-hour show included hits like “All My Life,” “ MonkeyWrench,” and “The Pretender.” The 30-year old band really knows how to work a crowd and that they did it well. Frontman Dave Grohl was extremely personable and talked a lot about playing New Orleans in the past and having love for the city. They had previously performed at fest in 2015.

Due to the continuous showers on Friday, the early part of the day was spent in the interview portion of Jazz Festival. Christone “ Kingfish’ Ingram gave a very enlightening look at the 25 year old guitar wizard.

He revealed that he had two choices as to what to do with his life, either play football or play the blues. The Mississippi native came to the conclusion that he could only play football for a short period of his life whereas he could play the blues until he died. His choice was a no brainer. And it was a major benefit for the fans.

American jazz singer, Samara Joy, also gave us an indepth look at her introduction to jazz  The 24 year old was raised in a musical family from a very early age. Her paternal grandparents, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon, were founders of Philadelphia gospel group The Savettes. She attended Fordham High School for the Arts and performed in its jazz band. Joy enrolled in the jazz program at SUNY’s Purchase College as a voice major and was named an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar. She revealed that a new album is forth-coming. Joy is indeed the future of jazz and a must to experience if she comes your way.

The major highlight on the last Saturday was more living legends including Neil Young and Crazy Horse and Queen Latifah.

Young and Crazy Horse’s set was chrisened as their first tour together since 2019. He told the massive crowd that “I’ve been in a musical desert. I haven’t played in a while and I miss it.”A major highlight of the set was an extended version of “Cortez the Killer.”

They are only a few dates into a tour, and though they’ just released the album, “FU##IN’ UP.”  The album features live re-recordings of most of the songs on their landmark 1990 album Ragged Glory, but with new names. The album is named for a song on Ragged Glory, but now it’s called “Heart of Steel.” They played “Cinnamon Girl” and “Everybody Knows this is Nowhere,” from the 1969 album Everybody Knows This is Nowhere.  Off the same album, they dug into a an 11-minute version of the fever dream “Down by the River,” with its long instrumental interludes. Much of the crowd joined in for the chorus.

It’s been 35 years since Queen Latifah dropped her first record that crowned her the Queen of hip-hop and her career has been going strong since. She has become a major star of television, movies, and really any medium of entertainment over the years and she maintains that status. Not only did she get her start as a rapper, her singing talent is unparalelled. Her first half of her set included much of her singing. Her duet of “Say So” with PJ Morton, an unfortunately brief snippet of Roy Ayers’ “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” and Aretha Franklin’s “Mercy Me” was exemplary. She also performed an amazing version of “California Dreaming.”

On songs like “Just Another Day,” “Come into My House,” the Living Single theme and her classic “Wrath of My Madness” Queen Latifah’s mic control was in full force. Her flows and breath control remain amazing, despite not performing much as a rapper over the last decades.

MC Lyte and Yo-Yo then appeared on stage to rap Brandy’s “I Want to Be Down” with Latifah before then being given center stage to perform their on bangers: “Cha Cha Cha” for MC Lyte, “You Can’t Play With My Yo-Yo” for Yo-Yo.

Queen Latifah ended the set in a fitting way with her anti-domestic abuse and pro-Black women anthem “U.N.I.T.Y.”

The last day of jazz festival highlights included a Jimmy Buffett tribute featured Irma Thomas having the time of her life singing “I Will Play for Gumbo.” “ It’s a little like religion and a lot like sex, you should never know where you are going to get it next.” Other participants included Sonny Landreth, Trombone Shorty, and some of the Preservation Hall Band. It was a ‘Parrothead’s’ delight.

Each year, there is a responding exclamation that this was the best fest yet! It’s also true this year, but each year has something special to take away for your memory bank. One cannot deny wondering what next year will bring. Jazz fest is like an addiction leaving you wanting more. It is a feast like no other. Here’s a toast to next year and what it will bring.

Rolling Stone Setlist: Start Me Up / Get Off of My Cloud / Out Of Time / Angry / Let It Bleed / Time Is On My Side / Whole Wide World / Tumbling Dice / You Can’t Always Get What You Want / Little T&A / Sympathy For The Devil / Honky Tonk Women / Miss You / Gimme Shelter / Paint It Black / Jumpin’ Jack Flash / encore: Sweet Sounds of Heaven / Satisfaction

Farm Aid 2019 https://www.unratedmag.com/farm-aid-2019/ Fri, 27 Sep 2019 05:40:18 +0000 http://www.unratedmag.com/?p=291368 Farm Aid 2019: A show for everyman

Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, WI, USA, September 21, 2019

by Mary Andrews

Farm Aid is much like a family reunion and this year the family consisted of 30,000 people. Many of those people have been returning to the event every year for 34 years. The rain showers did not keep Wisconsin away from the sold-out show. The entertainment was amazing.

The board consisting of Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, and Dave Matthews never dreamed that they would still need to aid family farmers for this long. However, conditions for the farmers have gotten worse instead of better. Farming remains difficult and Farm Aid is committed to continue to support farmers as long as that support is needed.

Nelson created Farm Aid in 1985 amid a foreclosure crisis for American farmers. Farmers were being thrown off their farms. Farm Aid was just was the farmers needed.

Every year multiple artists, as well as the board, donate their time and resources to make Farm Aid the success that it has been. This year’s star-studded lineup of adjunct artists included Tanya Tucker, Bonnie Raitt, Luke Combs, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Margo Price, Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real, Jamey Johnson, Yola, Jamestown Revival, Particle Kid, and Ian Mellencamp.

The fast-moving concert featured sets that ranged from ten minutes starting early in the day to an hour in length later with the big-name artists. The traditional hour-long press conference got the day rolling. Nelson, Mellencamp, Young, Matthews, and local activists and farmers discussed the challenges in the area and in the world to sustain our food system.

Regenerative agriculture are the buzzwords in agriculture now. That nurtures soil health and mitigates climate change.

Nelson was very firm during the press conference that, “These are the folks who feed us and we need to let them know that we need them.”

Matthews reaffirmed, “When we support family farmers, we are supporting people who are taking care of the earth and taking care of the planet. We are not paying them too much for what they do.”

Young added, “The key to our survival as a planet, the way it is now, the planet is not going to go anywhere. It could be really ugly after a while. It will be inhospitable to our life forms unless we do something. I think the solutions are simple and we need to have people representing us that believe in the kind of things we believe in such as sustainability. I think we need to have legislation to make sure that all the farmers in America use sustainable practices. Not practices that destroy the earth. “

The concert:

The Wisdom Indian Dancers got things rolling with dance and a chant that was quickly followed by Margo Price replacing Willie Nelson with her rendition of “The Lord’s Prayer.” Just as fast, Ian Mellencamp did a short acoustic set. The rocker was dressed this year in Western garb and cowboy hat and delivered a more country setting. His songs were about disappearing walls and peace.

Particle Kid aka Micah Nelson quickly followed up with an electric set. Brother, Lukas Nelson, sat in with the band on guitar. The rocking jam included “Everything Is ***.” Austin natives, Zack Chance, and Johnathan Clay, of Jamestown Revival, followed next with their set of upbeat tunes.

Tanya Tucker (credit: Mary Andrews)
Tanya Tucker (credit: Mary Andrews)

Tanya Tucker performed her set early in the day. Tucker is a consummate performer who has been in show business since she was 13 years old. Her fiery set was one of the best of the day and it was far too short. Tucker has recently released a new album, While I’m Livin.,’  It is the first album of original songs she has done in 17 years. She performed “Hard Luck” and “The Wheels of Laredo” from the new album. The biggest fan sing-along was her mega 1972 hit “Delta Dawn.”

Yola was the biggest surprise of the day with a voice that could be considered out of this world. She made a huge splash last week the AmericanaFest in Nashville. The UK songwriter sounds even better live than on her recordings. She did a dazzling cover of Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” This artist is going to be impossible to pigeon-hole into one genre. It’s good to see more diversity at Farm Aid.

Lukas Nelson and Promise (credit: Mary Andrews)
Lukas Nelson and Promise (credit: Mary Andrews)

Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real typically give a powerhouse performance at Farm Aid. This set was no exception. Nelson invited Margo Price, Micah Nelson, Nathaniel Ratliff and the Night Sweats, and Yola out to assist with “Find Yourself.” It was the highlight of the set. Another highlight of the set was their performance of Crosby, Stills, Nash’s “Carry On. “ They delivered on the rich harmonies of the iconic song.

The set had a level of cuteness not reproduced by any other band during the day. Leon, son of percussionist Tato Melgar, came on as the newest member of Promise of the Real. The boy is probably about three feet tall and had a full-size electric guitar strapped on. Leon had all the rock moves down pat, guitar face included, as he strutted across the stage singing and grinning.

Margo Price (credit: Mary Andrews)

Margo Price made many appearances during the day and night of the fest. Her set was adorned with a great cover of Janis Joplin’s “Move Over” and a new song “Long Live the King.” The new song seems to be a tribute to Martin Luther King and John Lennon. Both were victims of tragic deaths. It was clear that Farm Aid is her favorite gig of the year.

Jamey Johnson is another regular performer at Farm Aid every year. Johnson always seems to have a special guest. This year Randy Houser filled that spot. Johnson and Houser did dueling vocals on “Lead Me Home” and “Evangeline.” Johnson gave searing vocals on “This Land is Your Land” and “In Color.” Fans rewarded him with many standing ovations.

Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats gave their best soul-soaring set that has become a tradition at Farm Aid. Their set got the crowd up and dancing from the ‘getgo’ with their mega-hit, “S.O.B.” Rateliff knows how to wrap a crowd around his fingers as he shuffles across the stage and sings. The entire band knows how to take you to ‘church.’

Luke Combs is a newcomer to Farm Aid. Combs is on a roll with the top-selling country album of 2019, This One’s For You. The man is highly relatable to everyone as he performs songs like “When It Rains, It Pours” and “Beautiful Crazy.” Combs can tell a story with best songwriters.

Bonnie Raitt brought her signature song “Angel From Montgomery” along with her cover of Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House” to her set. She reminisced about the tragedy of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s death in a helicopter crash that occurred not far from the festival site. She dedicated Skip James’ “Devil Got My Woman” to Vaughan. Raitt’s slide guitar chops are still exemplary and a treat to experience.

Dave Matthews (credit: Mary Andrews)
Dave Matthews (credit: Mary Andrews)

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds’ acoustic set was sublime. Reynolds’ finesse with his guitar is unparalleled. It is mesmerizing to watch. Matthews’ vocals are as strong and hypnotic as ever.

John Mellencamp and his full band gave the fans everything they expected. His vocals were scorching. Miriam Sturm’s violin and Andy York’s guitar share the front of the stage and they are as dynamic as their leader. Mellencamp stopped the fans’ chorus once again to tell them they messed up on the lyrics of “Jack and Diane.’ He seems to enjoy the crowd performance regardless. The chorus of 30,000 people was breathtaking.

One never knows what Neil Young and the Promise of the Real will perform at Farm Aid. The set is different every fest and it is always great. This was a more laid-back set for Young. He sat down at the piano for the first song, “Are You Ready for the Country?” That seemed to be a surprise to everyone. He donned his guitar next for “Workin’ Man.” Young enjoyed the fans’ singing on “Homegrown.” Other gems of the night included “Harvest Moon” and “Heart of Gold.” “Rockin’ in the Free World” was the most upbeat song of the set.

Willie Nelson (credit: Mary Andrews)

The night ended with Willie Nelson and Family. Nelson dished out old favorite tunes like “Whiskey River,” “Goodhearted Woman,” “Still Is Still Moving,” and “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys.” Nelson & his family closed out the evening with a “Will The Circle Be Unbroken/I Saw The Light/I’ll Fly Away” medley featuring Young, Rateliff, Price, and Lukas Nelson. Price had her newborn baby with her during the finale. That was the second most ‘cuteness’ of the day.

Nelsonville Music Fest 2018 https://www.unratedmag.com/nelsonville-music-fest-2018/ Fri, 22 Jun 2018 06:38:37 +0000 http://www.unratedmag.com/?p=97284 What is the Nelsonville Music Fest

Hocking College, Nelsonville, OH, USA, June 1 to June 4, 2017

By Daniel Locke

The Nelsonville Music Festival is held at Robbins Crossing historic village on the campus of Hocking College located at: 3301 Hocking Parkway Nelsonville, OH 45764

The Nelsonville Music Festival took place May 31-June 3, 2018 in Nelsonville, Ohio featuring over 60 musical acts in four days on multiple stages along with on-site camping, artisan vendors, kids’ activities, food, a beer garden, and more. NMF is a presentation of Stuart’s Opera House, a non-profit historic theater and performing arts center in Nelsonville, Ohio. Billboard has called Nelsonville Music Festival “one of the best-kept secrets of the U.S. music festival circuit”, and in our 14th year, NMF continues to gain fans who want a music festival with a more personal experience.

Nelsonville has come and gone.  I am so sad.  It is funny.  This fest is known as the best hidden music festival in America. And more and more people find out about it every year.  And they come back year after year after year.  It is like a big family reunion.  Even the press love coming back year after year.  Because we are treated so good. And even through there is a lot going on. It is easy to see everything.  During the weekend-long festival, many of the bands will play more then once.  And each time they would play a different type of stage.  There are five stages.

  • Main Stage- You have the main stage which is the type of stage you would see at the most music fest.

  • Boxcar Stage- The next stage is actually an old box train boxcar.

  • Porch Stage- The next stage is a small main type stage.

Lung (credit: Daniel Locke)

  • No-Fi Cabin- The next stage is an old school room. And they perform inside the room. It holds maybe 40 people.  And this stage is always crowded.  The thing that really makes this stage is no electric.

  • Gladden House Session-Which is run by WOUB Public Media from the Ohio University. It is a log cabin and they performed on the front porch of the cabin. These sessions are recorded and video record to later viewing.

  • This year they have added new A mini skateboard ramp.  This is a proposal to build a Mini Ramp for NMF musicians and attendees. The Mini Ramp will also serve as a space for NMF mural artwork by attendees! The NMF Mini Ramp will be an essential addition to the festival, as it will provide performers and attendees with an alternative and unique activity! On Saturday one of the bands performed at the top of the ramp.
