“Deftones Rock Completely Sold-Out Amphitheater in Chicago to Kick Off Summer Tour with Rise Against”

Story by Jenafur Schlangen – Adams

On June 9th and due to the generous compliments of Live Nation (Chicago), UnRated Magazine was provided a pristine vantage point of the sold-out spectacle that was Deftones kicking off of their USA summer tour, co-headlining with Chicago’s own, Rise Against and special guests, Thrice.

A total of more than 9,000 fans had descended upon Live Nation’s Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island and the outdoor amphitheater was literally vibrating once Deftones walked onto the stage.

Wasting zero time, Deftones guitarist “Stef” Carpenter begins the set intensely with the song, “HeadUp” from the album, Around the Fur. Of course, it takes a mere seconds before a mosh pit is formed and thousands of beyond enthusiastic fans begin to jump, feeling the excitement as vocalist Chino Moreno chimes in with his trademark whine, commanding all 9,000 in front of him to “fly high.” By this time, my shin bones were literally shaking within my body.

Deftones, touring in support of their latest album release, Gore, focused mainly on songs of the past, including My Own Summer (Around the Fur album); Swerve City (Koi No Yokan album); and Digital Bath (White Pony album), and so many more old heavy and in-your-face favorites.

The newest album, Gore, is a follow-up to the Koi No Yokan album and the band only played one track off of it to give their fans a very small taste of their newer stuff. The song, Phantom Bride, features a guest appearance from Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains), and is definitely a more melodic as a whole compared to what we all know and love Deftones to be in their own right. But, in all honesty, the tune is quite impressive and certainly shows off the diversity of the band’s talent as a whole.

Rise Against, deriving from Chicago, is clearly excited to share the headlining slot on this tour with this legendary band and had been quoted as saying, “Every once in a while you get to share the stage with a band so powerful they make you work harder. After conspiring for years, we’re excited to finally share the road with such an epic band. We can’t wait to put Deftones and Rise Against fans under the same roof in 2017.”

The current tour runs only through July 9th, ending in Phoenix, Arizona so, if you are planning to catch it, you’d better hurry your ass up and grab your place in line!
