Chicago Own Common Comes to Ravinia

For the first time in its 100+ year history Ravinia (North America’s oldest music festival located in Highland Park a suburb outside of Chicago, IL ) welcomed its first Hip Hop artist, Chicago native Common to their pavilion on June 24th.

Backed by a full band and DJ and amid cheers and soul claps the Grammy and Oscar award winning artist performed fan favorites including: I Use to Love H.E.R., The Corner, The Food, Come Close, Be, GO, Resurrection.

Common reminded the audience of his gift as a master of simplicity that flashes his gift of eloquent words before performing U, Black Maybe by discussing the mean of the song and how it relates to the current climate in Chicago and across the country stating “Black maybe because a yes to some is a maybe to a black person” and “a white man’s yes is a black maybe”. He also stated that “there will be no more Mike Brown’s and it’s a new story for America to right the wrongs”.

He also took time during his performance to pay tribute to Prince and to announce a new show he is working on with Showtime entitled The Chi that will premiere on the cable network soon. He is one of the Executive Producers on the show.

It was a great show made even better because the artist appreciates his fans and where he came from just as much as his fans and the city appreciate him.
